As I walk down the sidewalk to Bolton for the last time this semester, the emptiness of campus echoes in my head like the nostalgic music in my ears. I sip on cherry-vanilla coke while writing this piece, thinking that I even managed to procrastinate on this last “assignment” of the semester. Looking through the window, I see families returning from watching their childrens’ graduation. In the dining hall, employees converse with one another, reminiscing on their year. Returning to my building, I pass my coworkers (shoutout to Brumby Hall CSAs!), thinking of the relationships we formed, despite not even knowing what their full face looks like. I lock myself in my room, thinking just how hard it will be to leave this place tomorrow.
Maybe this is just an overly poetic attempt at saying that we are never truly alone. Even sitting by myself, I am surrounded by people with distinct lives and relationships apart from myself. We are made up of memories; maybe just saying “How are you?” and expressing empathy to a stranger can impact their life. We become a part of their memories, and thus, become a part of them. My biggest takeaway from my first year of college is that I have the power to change the lives of others, and I intend to make a positive change.
