Madison Flowers

This is Madison Flowers. Madison is a fun person to be around and get to know. She is so easy to talk to, she loves so well and seeks passionately after the Lord’s heart.

I recently came back to Athens from one of the greatest Christmas breaks ever. I had travelled all over the place: I saw family in Alabama for the first time since last Thanksgiving, I toured the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and stood in that famous circle, I sprinted to the ocean in a sparkly dress moments after the ball dropped to ring in the New Year with lifelong friends, and I went on a spontaneous trip to Walt Disney World with my family. I only spent five days in my own house this break…basically just enough time for Santa to land his sleigh on my roof on Christmas Eve.

In the midst of my elaborate travels, the Lord taught me plainly.

  1. Things overwhelm me.
  2. He overwhelms that which overwhelms me.
  3. Jesus felt the overwhelming weight of sin.
  4. Jesus has come, overwhelming the grave.
  5. We are reconciled in overwhelming love.
  6. “I am” the Lord overwhelming.

I like to be my own Superman. I try to move all my mountains. And yet, I am discovering the beauty in the word “overwhelmed.” Psalms 46 says when nations are in uproar, when kingdoms fall, He lifts his voice and the earth melts. All he does is lift His voice. When the going gets tough, I have made a habit of repeating to myself “He overwhelms that which overwhelms me.”

He breaks the bow.

He shatters the spear.

He burns the shield.

He overwhelms that which overwhelms me.

Jesus’s love poured out on that cross overwhelms my valleys of trouble and makes them into doors of hope. As we begin this new year, let us remember these plain and simple truths. Let’s trust 2021 to the hands of our Heavenly Father, who through overwhelming love has set us free.

What is overwhelming you? What do you need freedom from?
