Brooke Raniere

Brooke is my best friend! Like, for real. We have been friends for almost 20 years now, and we’ve spent the past 19 of them counting down the days until we can convince our siblings to date so we can be unbiological sisters. There is no one on this earth that knows me better than Brooke does. Brooke is the prime example of loyalty, perseverance, and kindness in my life. She has been a rock for longer than I can remember. She has been there for all the big moments. Brooke has walked through every single season of life with me, and she hasn’t left – it takes quite the woman to want to be my friend even after the disaster that was JC Booth Middle School. B – you inspire me constantly. Your drive and ambition, and yet your relentless kindness to forgive and understand those around you better makes you one of the most special people I know.

This quote is one that frustrates me, but one I often think too much about:
‘It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear.’
(Frank Luntz)
This is a peril I can never seem to accept, and yet it constantly holds true. While this quote in a way scares me, I believe it is also a challenge. A challenge for me to hear others without malice, distrust, or ignorance. To really listen, without the  distraction of your inner voice or voices around you. Similarly, on the other hand, the speaker holds an equal responsibility: to speak a truth, a real truth. A truth rooted in compassion, understanding, education and empathy. This application is one that makes sense to me and brings me hope and a goal I strive for daily. Trust your neighbor, trust yourself. Hear and speak with truth and trust.
