This is Gracelyn Thrash.
Out of everyone who poured into me freshman year, Gracelyn had one of the biggest impacts on me. Her voice has always been one I listen closely to, mainly because on the very first night of our Freshley small group everything Gracelyn told us about herself made me feel like my inner thoughts were being laid out in front of me. The best way to describe Gracelyn is a fighter. Gracelyn is firm in what she believes and in who she’s fighting for. She is determined, powerful, and a leader at heart, and she does it all with a grace and humility that is beyond inspiring.
Declaration: say this out loud. ‘I have wings because God has given them to me.’
‘Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would flee far away and stay in the desert. I would hurry to my place of shelter far from the tempest and storm.’
– Psalm 55.
The above scripture is David declaring that he hopes to escape his circumstances and find rest in a safe and untroubled place. I feel like we all feel like David at some point. I love the book of Psalms because David is so pure and honest with how he is feeling, and he reveals his whole heart to God. And then God answers. God gave David his wings, and He gives us wings too. Wings are a symbol of hope, and hope is what allows us to fly away and be forever affected by the gentle wind of the spirit. I feel like God has been telling me that we all have been given this unique opportunity to fly away from our normal lifestyle, our culture of hurry, our neglect of our emotions, our selfishness, our distractions, and our dependency on others and the church to define our relationship with the Lord. God is giving you wings to fly away from your circumstances and be at rest knowing that God is good, God will protect you, and God will provide for you. Currently He has let us fly to a desert – there you can only trust God to provide, protect, and be good. ‘Hurry to your place of shelter.’ Hurry to God: your shelter, your home, your rock. He is protecting you from the violent winds of the world in which we are part of, and from the storm of sin that surrounds our culture. GOD HAS GIVEN YOU WINGS during this time! GOD IS INVITING HOPE in this season for you! GOD IS ASKING YOU to let him provide for you! So I challenge you during this time to open your heart (desires, hopes, fears, doubts, emotions, circumstances) to the Lord. Because you ask, because you trust, He answers because He is GOOD and He has given you wings!
